Sorry, I have been off the boards for awhile...got married in October, so we have been pretty busy. I am needing some advice for my baby. He is in the early
stages of kidney failure and he has been diabetic for 5 years. Does anyone have any suggestions on food he might eat. We were able to get him to eat boiled
chicken last night. He has lost alot of weight and his gluclose levels are up and down. Thanks, Denise and Bailey Beane.

I've been making scrambled eggs for Schultz & he seems to go for that. Not sure if it's what your baby should be eating or not, but my theory is
when they aren't eating they get whatever they'll take. I've had days when all I could get him to eat was a handful of dog bones & if that got
him to eat so he could get a good dose of insulin, then that's what he gets. I've also given him cottage cheese & sliced cheese (he loves that!).
Hope you find something that gets him eating again.
Congratulations on your marriage!!

Thanks for the info. The vet did say to give him anything to get him to eat. I know he likes eggs...so I will have to try that too. He still loves his
goodies, so I give him alot of those. I am just doing whatever I can to make him happy and comfortable. I just can't bare that thought of him leaving
me...it makes my heart ache.

I've told my vet that I want to keep Schultz happy & comfortable. If I can't do that for him, then he has nothing left. I'm also not ready to
give up yet, but we seem to be in a situation that isn't hopeful (as you are). You just keep doing the best you can & give him all the love you can.
I've been making scrambled eggs up for a couple of days at a time & then refrigerating them (saves me from cooking every day!). I wonder if some
oatmeal would work? Not sure what that does to BG as it's a grain (so don't use anything with added sugar, but maybe some good old fashioned or steel
cut oatmeal), maybe some warm soft oatmeal would be good to try too & easy to eat.

I boil ground turkey,1/4 cup cooked rice(brown) and some green beans. I mash it up well and it workds for me. You can also "sneak" a little dog food
in it. Hope you find something he will eat.

My other Newf just had knee surgery and he stopped eating his regular food. I started trying different canned foods and found Go! by Petcurean. It is a little
pricey, but he absolutely loves it. It smells like real people food and has a lot of meat and veggies in it. I will probably keep a couple of cans on hand for
the next time he gets fussy. I know how you feel. I've been there when you will try anyting just to get them to eat. Good luck!

Oh dear..Bailey is such a sweetheart, I love that picture....My vet, too, told me during Bud's difficult time towards the end ( not insinuating that
Bailey's time is near, please don't misunderstand that comment however), that basically I could feed him anything within reason that he would eat, and
just monitor his sugar and adjust accordingly if necessary...Some days it would be hamburger and rice, other days chicken and cottage cheese. It just
depended.....
I am thinking of you, I know you are saddened to be going thru this eating struggle, and hope the best for your boy!! Blessings, Judy, Angel Bud and Harley. |

Hi Denise,
Here are some ideas for foods that should work for diabetes as well as addressing Bailey's kidney function. Foods that are high in phosphorus are detrimental to kidney function, especially if the dog is in the end stages, has high phosphorus on blood work, or has been put on binders. Eggs: egg whites are very kidney friendly, but the yolks are not because they are high in phosphorus. Egg whites are high in bio-availability, which means the body uses all the nutrition and there isn't a digestive toxin put out. Depending on how bad Bailey's kidney function is, I would eliminate or limit the amount of yolks. Grains: brown rice is much much higher in phosphorus than white rice. The best type of white rice is glutinous (sometimes called sushi), next is short grain and then medium grain. Oatmeal is also high in phosphorus. If Bailey will eat white rice, that is what I would try if I was you. Another kidney friendly grain that is often recommended is Malt-O-Meal. Protein source: Chicken breast is lower in phosphorus than red meat. HTH Carla |

Would EggBeaters work as a substitute for whole eggs?

When Aini started to get finicky about her food, the one thing she always seemed to love was the Costco rotisserie chicken. She would eat that every time,
until about the last three weeks or so. But she wanted nothing to do with her kibble! Finally, she wouldn't even eat the rotisserie chicken. But there
are lots of other good ideas here, too. Keep trying, and you'll find something.

Hi Denise,
Congratulations on your wedding!!! I don't get to the board much these days either. Wishing you the very best.
Some of these links may not work anymore but this is what I have in my notes. They can be copied and pasted if the
link does not work? Maybe you can glean some help from them?
Some internet information could be dated, so you may want to check for the latest information.
lots of prayers and blessings
Information and links from the internet:
Please note* A kidney board would probably have the latest up to date information, with the internet it's hard to tell sometimes how old the information is. http://vetprof.com/client...iseaseInDogs/symptoms.htm http://courses.vetmed.wsu.../vm552/urogenital/arf.htm Diet and Supplements for Dogs with Kidney Disease and many links.

Bailey is not doing very good. He will hardly eat. He can barely stand up. Sometimes I have to hold him up so he can pee. How do I know when to let him go?? I
am trying to do everything I can, but I don't want him to be in pain. I am scared.... Denise and Bailey Beane

Denise - that is no set time. The important thing is to look at quality of life. If Bailey is not eating at all, it is impossible to keep the diabetes under
control. From what you have said, Bailey is in some type of crisis. Has he been to the vet recently? If not, I think you need to talk to him/her. Kidney
failure is not easily controlled - especially if it is advanced. I'm not saying "it is time", but I think it is something you have to consider
carefully right now. If Bailey can't enjoy anything, that probably is not quality of life. Also, and I know this sounds freaky, listen to Bailey. He
will "tell" you when he is ready to go. Watch him closely - you will know. I'm sorry this is happening, but it happens to all of us, and you
want to be comfortable with your decision.

Denise..How old is Bailey? Has he had his kidney values checked lately? Not eating anything at all? If not have you checked his BS and has he had any insulin?
I think the "time" is individual to each of us and our dog. I sure would check with a vet ASAP though if he is rapidly declining. Sorry so many??? but when is the last time he had a meal, insulin and what dose? Even if he hasn;'t eaten the BS can still go up and require just a very small dose but I do this by checking the BS here at home.

I am going to risk the wrath of everyone here. You must do whatever it is you have to do in order to establish a regular and guaranteed eating pattern. In
the early days of Storm's diabetes I used to crouch on the floor trying to entice him to eat. His food consisted of DCO kibble with a little tuna juice
sprinkled on top. I even made Yum Yum sounds - to no avail - Storm sat and looked at me as if to say "OK, if it is so good, you eat it". I was
running really late for a meeting one morning, several weeks down the line of Storm's diagnosis. In desperation I threw the whole tin of tuna on top of
the kibble. Result was that Storm gobbled it all up and we reached an understanding that day.
It was a result - Food, insulin, exercise, happy! |

Denise, I do think you should go to the vet and have the vet evaluate Bailey.
With the not eating it is complicating an already difficult situation. As to eating, I can only share my experience with Missy. She was a real 'food hound"... when she started the not eating I took her to the vet. I knew she was in trouble but wasn't sure just how 'dire' the situation was... and the vet said at this point you give her anything she'll 'accept' . I did home test so that was a help in that regard as I could adjust insulin... she started requiring less insulin. As to when it's 'time" ... each one has to come to that decision but for us I "Knew"... I knew when she started separating herself from us, wanting to be off on her own even at bedtime which just wasn't 'her". I knew when she no longer wanted to eat and she stopped drinking as well.... I saw the 'zest' for life had gone from her eyes... I knew my little girl was in pain and had "had it". I vowed I'd never let her sufffer when there was no hope of 'fixing' her anymore. Oh I feared I'd not be able to live up to that vow when the time actually came... but when that time did come... I knew I had to do what needed to be done to release her from a body that was causing her pain. Though it was as heartbreaking as anything ever in my life, I did find a strange comfort at the same time to know I had the ability to help her be relieved from pain... a pain that I knew would go on and likely get worse... ther simply was no more chance 'fixing' her. I hold you and Bailey in my prayers as this is a very difficult time , and hope the vet can help you both have some more quality time together, but if not that you'll be able to find comfort in knowing you have done everything possible and comfort in knowing you can give this final and ultimate act of love.

Bailey's symptoms also sound very much like how Schultz was acting when we found out he had Lyme Disease. So, in keeping with others' recommendation,
it's time for a visit to the vet.

We did take him to the vets and we are giving him more fluids. He does seem a little more active today. He is actually eating more. Yesterday was so bad for
him...I have never seen him so sick, he couldn't even stand on his own. Today is walking around and able to go potty without me holding him up. The vet
said to feed him whatever he will eat. I am just spending alot of time with Bailey. Having you all here to help me get through this is wonderful. Everyone has
been so supportive and helpful...and I know I am not alone. We love you all!! Denise and Bailey

Hi Denise and Bailey Beane,
We had a member a few years ago (I think it was Virginia?) that was giving sub q fluids at home.
Has the vet mentioned if that would help or if it is a possiblity? Enjoy every moment you can and please give Bailey extra snuggles for Molly and me. lots of hugs and blessings, If you do have to do the sub-q:
