October was a roller coaster ride with Andy. He was doing so well after we had his allergies tested and changed his diet to foods he is not allergic to. But of course Andy still has allergies. One of the ways that Andy manifests his allergies is interdigital furnicles.

Almost a year to the date he developed one and then another on both his back feet. This time I knew exactly what to do. I even had medicine left over from last year. So we treated him and both cysts are gone. While this was going on his BG was elevated so we increased his insulin slightly.
Once the feet cleared and it seemed we would be back to normal Andy started rebounding. I verified this by testing him at exactly one hour after his insulin. He would drop severly the first hour, always over 100 points. The morning he dropped from almost 400 to 150 in an hour I knew what was wrong. I did not know what to do about it.
We would get past one episode of rebound only to have another no matter what I fed him. Andy apparently still has rapid insulin metabolism. Once all the food and things he is allergic to left his body the rebounding became the issue we still needed to deal with.
So Margo told me to try waiting 15 mins to inject insulin after his meal and give 1/2 teaspoon of honey. It worked beautifully! He stopped rebounding and his numbers went back to normal.
He is around 200 at fasting and between 100 and 200 most of the day. Amazing what a little change can make. I tried just waiting to inject without using the honey and nope, the honey is absolutely needed. I set the timer for 20 mins as soon as I put his bowl down so there is a solid 15 mins before injection. The timer goes off and we are ready!
He is eating Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potato, brown rice, green beans and a fiber supplement. He loves it and is doing very well on this food.
So no matter how well regulated your dog is, stuff happens. We never stop learning.
Hugs to all your furbabies!
