The vet called this morning and said her labs look "not to bad, considering.". He said she is slightly anemic, but no great amount, and to be expected in a dog her age. She probably has some chronic arthritis that could be causing it and it was just a touch lower than what you would expect in a dog her age anyway. Her kidney functions, blood sugar and rest of her bw was ok except one liver enzyme that was elevated (alk. phosphatase).. he said that he wasn't too worried about the level, sometimes he has seen higher level in otherwise healthy puppies.. He asked if she was taking prednisode or any corticosteroids, and i said she never has. He said it could be an indication of Cushings, but other than the drinking, he didnt think her symptoms were indicative of Cushings but if i wanted to explore that we could. He said that this enzyme being elevated could be a number of things from something going on in the stomach, bone, liver or horemones.. or even if she had a bout of pancreatitis that had subsided, it could have affected it either.. so basically.. it could be anything, maybe nothing. He said he wasnt worried about anything that he had seen, felt or found in her bloodwork. He knows I'm not interested in hospitalization. His main interest was that she get an increase in calories. Suggested giving her some puppy food with her meals because its higher in calories and tasty, so she may consider that even though she is refusing a lot of things. He also suggested adding a little bit of Mazola oil to her food just for calories.

He said to call if anything strange happens, not to worry if she has an off day, considering her age and status its bound to happen. Best thing to do is keep doing what I'm doing. (her bg was 10 (180) on his 'expensive machine' as he called it lol.. I think he was expecting it to be off the chart like i didnt know how to take a sample . But anyway, I'm relieved. Money well spent He told me to come back in 30 days, have a repeat of that enzyme to see if it was just a reaction to an acute bout of something that she got over, considering her bad day the other day. So, yay!

Good point about the fat. I'm pretty well just trying to stay consistent with WHATEVER she will eat at a given time... last night i gave her boiled boneless skinless chicken breast with brown rice and green beans.. she tries to eat around the rice. Same thing if i try to give her bread in her food... an increase in carbs is hard. I looked for sweet potatoes at the grocery store, but it doesn't carry them (hard enough to find a cucumber at my store!) She does like cheese.. i've never tried her with cottage cheese though.

where do you get milk thistle? and how do you know how much to give?
