Dehydrated - update 2nd bloodwork came back bad |
Lead | |
|
Sammy's blood work came back with some abnormalities. Albumin, Bun, RBC, HGB, HCT all slightly elevated. The Vet said maybe he was a little dehydrated and
is doing another inhouse blood test on Friday. She did not seem too concerned but wants to follow up to be safe.
What do you think?

Wouldn't it be wonderful if they could be perfect in all the tested areas? I don't think I would worry too much if she said slightly elevated - every
do is different. However, if you thing Sammy might be dehydrated, someone here puts a little beef or chicken broth in the dogs water. She was afraid her
diabetic dog wasn't drinking enough, and that worked for her. It is probably hot there already - does Sammy tend to get overheated?

Oh yes, Sammy is my long hair doxie and it is already over 100 degrees here. But Sam stays in the house all day. He really is not one to drink much. Maybe the
broth might be a good idea.
I just gave him his summer buzz so most of the long hair is cut off but he still gets hot. I am going to be sure and keep him trimmed really short.

All of those tests being elevated does indicate dehydration, especially with the HCT and albumin also being high. There are other things that could cause some
of those values to be high, but not when they are all put together.
If you give him extra broth, make sure it is low-sodium (though ask your vet, I suspect sodium free would be better since he's probably getting an adequate amount in his food if he's eating a balanced diet). Maybe you could just boil some chicken in water and use that water to add to his food rather than using commercial broth. Let us know how Friday's results are; hopefully they will improve. Grace

I think they are probably right on. All of those can be elevated with dehydration. Lucy is not a drinker and I put the broth from her chicken in her food and
in her water both. It's probably the only fluids she gets all day.

The vet did an in house blood work today on her lab machine and the results are the same or worse. We took him in at 8am before any chance for overheating or
dehydration of the day could occur.
We are doing another full workup and sending it off to another lab. There are so many things it can be, tumors, heartworm etc. The dx is Polycythemia. I have lots of research to do. Keep Sammy in your prayers. Andy would die without him. They have been together since they were just months old. We also know from their family tree they are actually related.

I will be thinking good thoughts for Sammy. I had hoped the solution would be an easy one - guess not.

Anne, I was hoping for better bloodwork results today! Has Sammy being drinking more and peeing well over the last few days? I checked my lab book at the only
thing listed under increased albumin is dehydration. Hopefully things will work out, for you and Andys' sake :o)

Thanks Jerri, Kay and Dee.
Grace he has never been big on drinking water and his pee is limited. When Andy pees you would think he had not peed for a week. My gosh what a long pee! But Sam just does little squirts and seems to be constipated a lot. With the new diet food he is on (Royal Canin Weight Control), he is drinking more and his poop are looking better! My Vet really believes in the Royal Canin food. The ingredients are NOT great but with all the high end food I have purchased and all the home cooking I do, my dogs are gaining weight and not doing all that great. Even my Chiwennie has gained two pounds! I am going to give the prescription dog food a go. I even bought some of the diabetic recipe for Andy. Will try it tomorrow and report back what happens. Sammy could not be more upset with me. He hates dieting and he hates diet food! LOL

Anne, I hope this is something that can be managed.. I'm not familiar with this condition and with the recent family berevement of hubby's nephew
haven't had time to 'research' I will certainly be keeping Sammie in my prayers. Did the vet feel the diet change will control this problem of
Sammies?
As to food.... sometimes the "best' of foods isn't always the "right food' for some pooches. Look at my Quinncy.. had him on one of the '6-star' rated foods ( EVO) and it was AWFUL for him! his blood work was bad and he developed fatty deposits in his eyes. ( I never looked down at the %-age of fat content!!!!!!!!!! ) For Missy... she was on WD from the get-go of her diabetes dx .. and her blood work went from lots of "offs to almost perfect and it helped in getting/keeping her regulated . Pre diabetes ...from the time I got her, I bought high end foods.. she HATED them... ( local shelter got bags and bags of high quality foods because the brat wouldn't eat them!) Yes, we ended up with not very good kibble but supplemented with our human meats/veggies.... she got fat! The WD got her to her ideal weight..regulated her diabetes her blood work got to all but perfect and she LOVED it! I did give her DermCaps ( from vet) with the WD . They are concentrate fatty acid supplement .. and they seemed to keep her poop from getting too hard/dry. .. and good for her skin/coat.

Terry I am sure going to give it a try. Andy had some type of skin allergy to the WD so lets hope whatever it was in not in the Royal Canin. I have said it
before and will say again, I would feed Andy sawdust if it controlled his diabetes. After all, the diabetes is seriously destructive. Controlling it has to be
first.
Vet called this morning, got the 2nd labs back that were sent out to the lab again and feels like it might be an issue with Sammy's heart. She said the heart may not be functioning properly and giving him enough oxygen so red blood cells are over-produced to provide more oxygen. She is calling the cardiologist on Monday and will get back with us. Deep sigh.

The cardiologist thinks it would be best to see Sam and get a full workup. So we will be getting him an appt very soon. Will post what we find.

Anne, I just caught up with your Sammie problems. Did the vet mention any examples of heart problems that Sammie may have? Let us know when you've
scheduled an appointment.
