Her tail swelled very big and she kept hiding from me. I knew it had to be infection or abscess. The DR sedated her and drained it. He said it was fill of pus. Thought maybe a spider bite but she never had a lesion that looked like something bit her. Anyway she is better. I really don't have a regular vet here since I moved so I have made an appt Thurs(quickest I could get) at a vet I hear is very good. I just want him to recheck her. It is much better today but she still has some drainage. They gave her Metacam so I tried it slowly and she seems ok with it. I also have pain pills from her vaccine reaction. Also antibiotic. Have any on you ever had this happen? All I know for the past yr she had a little lumpy thing on her tail near her back. It seemed to be nothing. I now wonder if it was a cyst or something that is now infected. ????????? I don't have a clue. BTW Nick went home last week and so far so good. I miss him but with Emma I have my hands full. I couldn't help but notice your mention of Metacam. That's what they gave Lucy after her dental...It is pretty powerful stuff- when on it, she was so drugged out and couldn't keep her eyes open, was drooling (dental vs drugs?), anyway if I were you, I wouldn't use it in combination with any other pain meds that you may have. It may be too much for her. It also affected Lucy's bowels and she got all stopped up and couldn't go until this afternoon, finally, she had a good bm. Just be careful with the little ones. Does she miss Nick? I did Yesterday but today she seems better and I gave "almost" full dose of Metacam this am. I know how it is, Bo had it and it really zonked him so I went easy with Em and still tried to make her pain better. So far she is going out good. Yes I miss Nick. I missed him really badly first few days. Emma never acts like she misses him but when Bo died she did not either. I think Em likes being "only dog". LOL. I think it is best for me if they can handle it though to let Nick go home. He seems happy(I went to see him last week) and so far everything is going well. He is a sweet little dog. I tell you my nerves are such where one is enough!!!! I worry too much and just can't stand it when they are sick. I am worried it is taking me till Thurs to see the new vet but she seems OK for now. Sounds like she'll be on the mend in no time! I never experienced this with a pooch.... well once Missy got what is called a 'sterile' abcess from a shot.... but i too had a wen on my head for years... ever since I could remember but it never gave any problem till I was in my 30s.. suddenly, and who knows why.. it blew up like an egg ( practically overnight it seemed) and very infected! The Dr that removed it said "it happens".... LOL that's all the answer I got when I asked why after all this time did it get infected? Terry ( Angel Missy- was diabetic) ,and my rescues, Naddie and Quincy ( non-diabetic)

I don't know how everyone else does it with so many, especially with the diabetic ones. Lucy keeps me on my toes all the time- and I don't work!!! (yet) So this "thing" was on her back near the tail? Not the anal gland, huh? On top the tail? Do you have foxtails where you live? They can get in there and cause abcesses too. Well, it's not exactly dry desert is it? There was a little lump on the left base of her tail (nearest her back) . Had been there I know several months if not a year. thurs I noticed a crusty like stuff on her tail. I cleaned it and some gray looking stuff came out but then seemed fine and I really thought she had a cyst that burst. (BO did one time). Anyway by Fri night it was a raging infection. And of course Sat there is no other option but ER. They were real good though and I was happy to have them!!!! Yeah Dee on top of her tail. Left side near her back. Just lumpy feeling. ?????? I remembered reading aboout foxtails somewhere but dont think we have them. She hasn't been anywhere but fenced yard with regular grass. ????? We may never know what caused it or why. It was truly gross - lots of pus, like you wrote. We never had it removed. Vet said to leave it and just check to make sure the cyst remained the same size. Abbey also has a cyst but it's on her shoulder. It blows up continuously but when it drains, it's like pure water. When it drains, I can feel the cyst but then the area around it starts filling up immediately again. Vet said we won't remove the cyst. Sigh. Apparently the fluid buildup doesn't hurt her. Sounds like Em had the Jenny version. Jac, Ella (golden retriever, not diabetic), Abbey (golden retriever/Irish setter, not diabetic) beautiful Angel Jenny (golden retriever), and cats Mona and Ernie. Jenny passed away February 15, 2008 at almost 14 years old. Weight: 65 pounds. Diabetes, myasthenia gravis, hypothyroid. Started on Caninsulin (Vetsulin) for 3 months then switched to NPH - 13 units twice daily. .

Prissy has had surgery to drain 2 that became infected for no reason. One was on the tail like your baby. She has many more on her little body, some will drain on their own and never give her a problem but every so often one will get infected. Only two needed to be drained. Most of the time anti's will help the infection. She did get stung by a red wasp a few years back and it also got infected and was a quite large welt. I am hoping and praying that we don't have any more infections in the ones she has since she is now a diabetic. Dr. says some dogs just have the luck of getting these and others don't. He gave me more antibiotics and it does look better. I am hoping it is gone never to return but now I am paranoid. Hope Prissy does well with no more either!!!!
