Sissy was a 15 1/2 year old Lhasa Apso. She was diagnosed with diabetes on September 21, 2007. She went to the Rainbow Bridge and received her wings on
February 28, 2009. I miss you, Sissy. Run free and eat lots of treats."In moments of joy, all of us wished we possessed a tail we could wag" W.H.

My mom used to have a white dog.....he never had tear stains. She claimed it was because she home cooked all his meals......and never ever gave bisquits with
color. But, I'll ask her if she had any other 'secrets'.

Tear Stains are a common problem in Maltese, However none of mine have had any problems. It is very common while puppies are teething and it often resolves
once that is over and the adult teeth are in.
Over the many years of reading about staining from various maltese owners, there doesn't seem to be a difinitive cause or cure. Some have found once food was switched ( usually to one that is advised for allergies...will result in the staining to go away ( usually if you find the cause you still have to wait for new hair to grow out to see the difference. Some have switched to bottled water and found the staining goes away. Some even noticed a difference after going from plastic to glass/steel bowls. If the staining is sudden onset, then it is usually thought to be caused by allergen or a bacterial problem. To help fade the staining many use products such as "Angel Eyes" though I wouldn't as it has antibiotic in it. Sometimes you have to see if ducts are blocked, as this can cause a constant 'overflow.. therefore causing constant 'wetness' and then followed by bacterial issue causing the staining. Some have had success by making a watery mix of boric acid and hydrogen peroxide ( watery not pasty) and apply with a q-tip being careful to not get into the eye. I personally think somehow the Ph of their system has something to do with it and be it food, water ..whatever.. that if the Ph of the system is good less likely a problem. .. though that is just my own unfounded 'theory".
